According to Variety, Paul Walter Hauser will be joining the cast of Disney’s Cruella, a live-action origin story based on the classic 101 Dalmatians antagonist Cruella de Vil. He will be starring alongside Emma Stone who will play the iconic villian. Director Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) will be leading the team with Marc Platt, Kristin Burr and Andrew Gunn producing. Emma Thompson is also in talks to star in the movie.
Hauser had his first breakout role in the MMA drama Kingdom, after which he appeared in I, Tonya as Harding’s bumbling bodyguard. Hauser also appeared in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and Mindy Kaling’s Late Night. Currently, he is starring on YouTube’s streaming hit Cobra Kai. Just recently, Hauser also landed the role of Richard Jewell in Clint Eastwood’s upcoming film of the same name.
As we await further details of the upcoming Disney remake, fans are expecting to learn more about the origin of De Vil who was obsessed with capturing the titular puppies in the original 1961 animated film. Glenn Close was the last actress to portray this role in the 1996 live-action film produced by John Hughes, in which her character was also the head of a fashion house.
Right now, it is not clear where Cruella will pick up in de Vil’s timeline. Details of Hauser’s role are also unknown.
Cruella will is scheduled to play in theaters on December 23, 2020.
