Disney Greenlights ‘Descendants’ Spin-Off, ‘The Pocketwatch’

Disney Channel’s massively successful Descendants franchise is moving forward in a new way.

According to Deadline, Disney has greenlit a Descendants spin-off movie titled The Pocketwatch. The project is said to take viewers to the world of Wonderland, a world without any form of logic, inhabited by fantastical creatures, anthropomorphic animals, and a slew of colorful characters, which was made famous by Disney in Alice in Wonderland.

In true Descendants fashion, the film will introduce the iconic Disney princesses and villain’s daughter’s. Starting with Red, the whip-smart and rebellious teenage daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe, the perfectionist and athletic daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming.

In addition to some of Disney’s classic songs, the film will include seven new songs. Jennifer Phang is set to direct and co-executive produce the film, which is scheduled to begin production this fall.

“’The Pocketwatch’ presents a delightful canvas with fantastical world building. Musicals sparked my imagination when I was a kid and are a huge part of what drew me to filmmaking,” Phang said in a statement. “I think that’s because they have a way of conveying these lovely, nuanced ideas through song and expressive movement. I’m also always inspired by the diversity of families that exist all around the world. So I really jumped at the chance to craft a supercharged musical experience and explore some new, invigorating themes inside an expansive Disney universe.”

The fan-favorite Disney Channel Original Movies DescendantsDescendants 2, and Descendants 3 rank as the top-rated cable movies among kids and tweens for 2015, 2017, and 2019, respectively. Each DCOM’s soundtrack reached the top spot on the Billboard chart, and the soundtracks for Descendants and Descendants 2 are gold-certified.

Dove Cameron, the late Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson, and Booboo Stewart starred in the first three films, which were directed by Kenny Ortega. Boyce tragically passed away in July 2019.
