As crazy as it sounds, we’re a little over six months away from Sony’s next Spider-Verse film, Kraven the Hunter, hitting theaters. Although the world is still recovering from the studio’s last “tentpole” Morbius and the accompanying memes, it appears that there is still some interest in this project. A recent interview with the film’s star might have just generated even more too.
Sitting down with Variety, Aaron Taylor-Johnson said that the film would be a slight departure from the comics. How so? Well, despite being known as a character referred to as “the hunter”, he’s actually going to love animals.
More specifically, the actor said he’ll be “an animal lover and protector of the natural world.”
On paper, this may not make sense to fans; however, when looking at the current political climate and how big of a deal animal cruelty is, this could be a very smart decision on behalf of Sony.
Now, in the interview, Taylor-Johnson also pointed out how much he thought the character was “cool” because he wasn’t “an alien, or a wizard,” but rather “a human with conviction.”
Does this mean something happens to one of the animals he loves and protects in the film, forcing him to become a hunter? Or will his relationship with nature make him a different kind of predator altogether? We’ll just have to wait and see.
J.C. Chandor (Triple Frontier) is directing with Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk writing the screenplay. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will be producing the film. Taylor-Johnson nabbed the leading role after execs at Sony were thrilled with his performance in the upcoming action flick Bullet Train. Production is expected to start in the coming weeks in the UK.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Sergei Kravenoff was born in Russia and became a big game hunter later in life, mostly in Africa. After drinking a witch doctor’s poison, he gained super-strength, enhanced reflexes, and high stamina. This allowed him to bring down bigger animals such as elephants and Gorillas. After a while, he grew tired of big game hunting, due to it being easy, and focused his attention on Spider-Man. Several defeats later, he became one of six members of the notorious villain team, The Sinister Six.
The film’s tone will reportedly be a mix of Man on Fire and Logan. Kraven The Hunter will hit theaters on January 13, 2023. The film joins a growing list of Spider-verse projects in various stages in development along with Madame Web, Spider-Woman, Morbius, and the ongoing Venom franchise.
