Even though Comic-Con is over, it seems like one more bombshell was left from Marvel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Destin Daniel Cretton will be directing the fifth Avengers film for Marvel Studios. Cretton also directed the immensely successful Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings released to both critical and fan acclaim.
Interestingly enough, Cretton was just reported to be directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and not Secret Wars which will most definitely be filming back to back due to their release dates. Could the Russo Brothers potentially come back to direct Secret Wars? Most likely, no as Kevin Feige recently stated to Deadline that the two would not return to direct the next Avengers films. However, it is interesting that Cretton is supposedly only directing Kang Dynasty.
Cretton’s slate at Marvel is only growing lately after he signed a huge picture deal with the studio. He is developing a sequel to Shang Chi as well as multiple Disney+ series including Executive Producing a series based on Wonder Man. He is on post-production on the Disney+ adaptation of American Born Chinese.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will release in theaters on May 2, 2025. It will be followed later that year by Avengers: Secret Wars in November. Secret Wars will close out the recently titled Multiverse Saga revealed at Comic-Con. Disney’s D23 Expo in September is the place to be this summer for additional updates on these projects.
