RUMOR: ‘Madame Web’ To Be A ‘Spider-Man’ Prequel

August 12, 2022Dempsey Pillot

Since it was first announced, Sony’s Madame Web has been shrouded in, well, a web of mystery. Recently leaked set photos have made it even harder to decipher the film, especially since they seemed to hint at Dakota Johnson playing a totally different version of the classic character. But A new report from The Cosmic Circus might be the key to understanding who and what the film is about, as well as when exactly it takes place.

In an article posted Friday morning, the site alleged that it had obtained key information about who most of the characters are playing in the film. Before I reveal that information, I just want to urge readers to take it with a grain of salt. Not only because it hasn’t been verified by Sony, Marvel, or any of the major trades, but because if it’s not true you may be disappointed. I say that because if this info is true, this film might be a bit more interesting than we’ve been led to believe and it could actually reshape the future of Sony’s Spider-Verse.

Despite what the previously mentioned set photos hint at, sources close to The Cosmic Circus claim that Dakota Johnson will in fact be playing the original Madame Web, Cassandra Webb. Although her outfit aligns with the look of another character who takes up the mantle in the comics, Julia Carpenter, it appears that may have just been a playful nod.

Carpenter will appear in the film though. That’s who Sydney Sweeney is expected to play.

Celeste O’Connor is expected to play Mattie Franklin, another character who has been both Madame Web and Spider-Woman in the comics. The site theorizes that Mike Epps could also be playing her dad.

Isabela Merced seems to be playing Anya Corazon a.k.a Spider-Girl. If true, this could give credence to FandomWire’s report about a Spider-Girl project being in development from last month.

[I just want to pause here to say that the potential introduction of so many female superheroes, or characters that are destined to become heroes, all at once makes it seem like Sony has major plans for its Spider-Verse.]

Now, here is where the casting gets crazy. Apparently Adam Scott is poised to play Uncle Ben Parker – THE Uncle Ben Parker. That’s not all. Emma Roberts is expected to play his sister Mary Parker a.k.a Peter Parker’s mom!

Now, it’s unclear how Ben and Mary will fit into the story, but other leaked set photos seemed to imply that Johnson’s character knows Ben or that they at least work together.

As of right now, there is no indication that Scott and Roberts will be aged up. But once again, if true that means that Sony’s Madame Web won’t just be another Spider-Verse spin-off, but rather a Spider-Verse prequel! Regardless of whose Spider-Man universe it takes place in, I think it presents numerous possibilities for the franchise going forward.

S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) will direct the film, while Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, and Kerem Sanga (Dinner in America) contributed to the screenplay.

For those unfamiliar with Madame Web, she is depicted as an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis and thus was connected to a life-support system that looked like a spider web. Due to her age and medical condition, Madame Web never actively fought any villains. For that reason, sources have stressed it’s possible the project could turn into something else. Insiders close to Deadline claim that Sony wants this character to be their own version of Doctor Strange, due to the character’s sensory powers.

Filming began last month, and is expected to continue through September in Boston. The film just recently got pushed back to October 6, 2023. It appears the studio is hoping to bank of the success of the Venom films that also had moderate box office success after their October releases.

The next Spider-Verse film being served by Sony is Kraven the Hunter, which hits theaters this January.
