Bette Midler Says Yes To ‘Hocus Pocus 3’

After nearly 30 years of slumber, the Sanderson sisters will finally return to Salem to wreak havoc this weekend in Hocus Pocus 2.

While a third film hasn’t officially been announced just yet, one of the film’s stars has come forward to say that she hopes the next one won’t take as long to make.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bette Midler spoke at length about how much fun it was to return to the role of Winifred Sanderson in the highly anticipated sequel. But, acknowledging the fact that not every actor gets to revisit the same role, she wished it happen a lot sooner.

Speaking about one role she loved that she only got to play once she said, “I’m envious of other actors who have franchises. I was hoping for a sequel to First Wives Club, but we never got that. After 30 years with no sequel to Hocus Pocus, I’ve always been envious of people who get to do their favorite character more than once. The fact that we got to do this finally, after 30 years of promoting the idea, I’m glad we got to do it. I’d love to have a franchise — especially [with this] character I love playing.”

She added, “If there was a third one, of course I’d sign on, but I don’t know how.”

Teasing the new story to a certain degree, she explained that she could not envision how the witchy trio would return. “I can’t imagine what the story would be,” she said. “But I love Winifred, Sarah, Mary, and our relationship. It’s good for women. We stick together through hell and high water, but we do cause mayhem, and not many women cause that much mayhem!”

In a different interview, Midler’s co-star Sarah Jessica Parker confessed that there was a potential idea for the third film, and that it had been conceived by the third member of the trio, Kathy Najimy.

“Kathy had a good idea that the third one should be animated. That would be cool and a smart idea. It’s fun, funny, and could be interesting and innovative, like old-fashioned or new.” Parker said.

She also said she’d be onboard for a third film if Bette and Kathy were down. Like anything else in Hollywood, we’ll just have to see what happens. With such a massive fanbase though, we don’t think magic or a miracle will be needed to see the Sanderson sisters reunited again.

In the new film, it’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high-school students to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve.

Hocus Pocus 2 also stars Sam Richardson (The Tomorrow War), Doug Jones (The Shape of Water), Whitney Peak (Gossip Girl), Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories), Lilia Buckingham (Dirt), Froy Gutierrez (Teen Wolf), with Tony Hale (Veep) and Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso). The film is directed by Anne Fletcher (Dumplin, The Proposal), produced by Lynn Harris (King Richard, The Shallows), with Ralph Winter (Hocus Pocus, X-Men franchise), David Kirschner (Hocus Pocus, Chucky), and Adam Shankman (Disenchanted, Hairspray) serving as executive producers.
