Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who directed multiple episodes of Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series Ms. Marvel will direct a new Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, Deadline is reporting.
Details on the project are being kept under wraps but the project is the same one Damon Lindelof has been developing for a few months now. Lindelof is co-writing the project but it is unknown at this time who the other writer is. Industry insiders saying that bringing on Obaid-Chinoy was important so that person’s own vision for where they see this story headed gets included in the script.
This project will likely be Star Wars return to the big screen, as Taika Waititi’s film is still in the very early stages of development, Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie is being written by Michael Waldron, and Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron appears to be squashed.
There have been no updates on any of the other projects from Waititi, Jenkins, or Feige, which makes the future of the franchise even harder to field. Fortunately, there is no shortage of Star Wars content coming to the small screen for the next few years. Andor is in full swing on it’s first season with The Mandalorian season 3 and Ahsoka coming next year. Lucasfilm is no rush for big screen content and will take their time to get this project right.
