Marvel Studios’ ‘X-MEN’ Movie Update: New Writers on Board and Teases!

Well it looks like we got an update for X-Men, mutant fans.

With X-Men slowly coming together with Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier attached to direct and Michael Lesslie penning the script, Schreier gave some minor updates while promoting Netflix’s Beef season 2.

Collider had the opportunity to interview Schreier were he told them that his fellow Beef crew members Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo will be penning the script for the iconic superhero Marvel team while the film is still in development.

This isn’t the first time he’s worked with both Jin and Calo because he’s worked with them in the first season of the Emmy winning series Beef and Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*.

Jin is of course known for creating, writing, and directing Netflix’s Beef, he is also known for writing episodes in sitcoms It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and 2 Broke Girls.

Calo is best known for her work that includes FX and Hulu’s Emmy winning series The Bear, where she serves as co-showrunner, writer, and director, and wrote episodes of the first season of Beef and episodes for the animated adult series Bojack Horseman.

Schrier made it clear in the interview that he’s an X-Men fan and can say only a little bit of what he’s looking for to explore.

“When you go back and read X-Men comics, there’s ideology, but also interpersonal drama, almost of a soap opera quality. Having writers who understand both how to drive ideology from personal stakes, if we get that right, that’s what will feel most honest to what X-Men can be.”

Schrier can’t give too much away because Marvel Studios is predominantly known for keeping everything under wraps and it’s still in early development, but he did tease that he’s been looking at older comics that includes Chris Claremont’s entire run from 1975-1991 as an inspiration for his take on the characters.

Claremont’s run of X-Men is heavily known for introducing fan-favorite characters like Storm, Wolverine, Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Rogue, and Colossus while giving the original characters like Cyclops and Jean Grey, richer and darker storylines like “The Dark Phoenix Saga” where Jean gets possession of great power as a Phoenix that’a corrupted her life and “Days of Future Past” with adult Kitty Pryde goes back in time to prevent the threat of Mutants life where Sentinels take over the world.

Jin tells Collider he too is also an X-Men fan and who’s his favorite character:

“I have such fond memories of me and my dad, Saturday morning, every morning, waking up, I think it was 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. central time and we watched every single episode, read the comics, and I was a huge Gambit fan growing up, so the love is very strong.”

As you can tell, the enthusiasm for this creative team to reboot X-Men is very optimistic and they are fans of the source material.

As of now, the X-Men movie reboot is still under pre-production but we should expect some casting news sometime this year with rumors that it will start this filming this summer and expected to be released in the year of 2028.
