Donnie Yen To Star In Disney’s Live-Action MULAN Remake!

International martial arts superstar and star of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Donnie Yen has joined the cast of Disney’s live-action adaptation of Mulan.

Yen will play Commander Tung, a mentor and teacher to Mulan. For those familiar with the original animated film Tung was not a character and has been created specifically for this film.

Mulan is set to begin production soon in China, New Zealand and Australia. Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu was cast in the lead role, with the studio still casting other stars.

The film will be directed by Niki Caro who directed Disney’s sports film McFarland USA. Caro has previously described the remake as a big, entertaining and moving martial arts epic.

Disney’s live-action remakes have grossed over $4.5 billion at the worldwide box so far, and will look to continue that success with  Mulan, and remakes of Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, Sword In The Stone, Lady In The Tramp, Peter Pan, And The Little Mermaid all in active production and/or development.

Disney’s Mulan will hit theaters on March 27, 2020.
