‘The Lion King’ On Track To Gross $150 Million At The Box Office In Its Opening Weekend

June 28, 2019Skyler Shuler

Earlier this week tickets went on sale for Disney’s reimagining of The Lion King, and while the film is breaking records in advance tickets sales, it looks like that is going to propel the film to huge box office numbers in its debut.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is eyeing a massive $150 million opening, according to early tracking. That number could fluctuate in weeks to come as Disney ramps up its marketing push over the course of the next few weeks. Back in May, BoxOfficePro, projected that the remake is long tracking to make up to $180-230 million.

An opening of that magnitude would surpass the openings of Disney’s other remakes Beauty and The Beast ($174.7 million) and Alice In Wonderland ($116.1 million), both films would go on to earn over a billion globally. With a prime Summer release, The Lion King could likely receive the same financial success.

“The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy, and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. Utilizing pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring treasured characters to life in a whole new way.”

Directed by Jon Favreau, the film stars Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Alfre Woodard as Sarabi, John Oliver as Zazu, John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Eric Andre as Azizi, Florence Kasumba as Shenzi, Keegan-Michael Key as Kamari, JD McCrary as Young Simba and Shahadi Wright Joseph as Young Nala. Hans Zimmer is on board composing the film as he did the 1994 animated classic. Elton John and Tim Rice will also be returning, as they are set to collaborate with Beyoncé on a new song.

The Lion King will roar into theaters on July 19, 2019.
