Cartoons On Disney+: A Reference Guide

In 2019, The Walt Disney Company released Disney+ with excellent response from audiences. The purpose of this streaming service was twofold: offer exclusive Disney content such as original films and television shows as well as open the doors of the longstanding Disney Vault by placing their enormous backlog in one place. Almost one year later, Disney+ has had enormous success, bigger than even the company predicted, with over 60 million subscribers so far. With fan-favorite shows such as The Mandalorian and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Disney+ has continued to grow with no signs of slowing. However, because their focus has been primarily on new content, the growth specifically of classic library content has not been as rapid. Our friends at What’s On Disney Plus have put together a comprehensive list that details all of the Disney content that is currently unavailable on the service. As of now, more than 550 Disney properties are missing for Disney+ which makes it clear that, despite the company’s claims, the vault is not entirely open.

Because it is still such a new service, I am willing to give Disney the benefit of the doubt on this issue. However, there is another, similar issue which strikes me as strange: the lack of classic cartoons. Though there are some Golden Age cartoons on Disney+, the total amount on the service makes up less than 25% of the theatrical cartoons that were originally released during the Golden Age of animation. However, the ones that are have been restored in HD and look beautiful. The strange part is, there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why certain cartoons appear on the service and others don’t. Almost all of the cartoons available are in color, except for two early black and white Mickey Mouse cartoons. The rest of them are made up of a small smattering of Mickey, Donald, and Goofy cartoons, along with a few Silly Symphonies and a couple of random one-offs. Like I said, no rhyme or reason. It reminds me of what Leonard Maltin said to Disney when he proposed his line of Walt Disney Treasures in the early 2000s: “You’re putting out all of these cartoons willy nilly on VHS. Why not do them in a more organized way?” The same logic seems to apply to Disney+.

This brings me to my next point: the hard work has already been done. Because of those Walt Disney Treasures DVDs, almost all of the cartoons have already been organized and released. However, those DVDs remain out of print and a quick search on eBay shows that they are all going for high prices. Disney+ would be the ideal way to bring them back to the masses, similar to what HBO Max is doing with Looney Tunes. Not only does HBO Max feature countless more classic cartoons than Disney+, but it is an even newer service and one that is actively working to restore their catalog and make them more readily available. Perhaps Disney is quietly doing a similar thing with their cartoon library, but until I hear or see otherwise, I am not convinced.

Therefore, I have made a comprehensive list that includes all of the theatrical cartoons produced by The Walt Disney Company from Steamboat Willie to the present day. Disney+ has already released all of their Pixar shorts on the service and now it’s time for them to do the same with their Disney cartoons. Below, I have provided two chronological lists of cartoons. The first list consists of cartoons currently available on Disney+, whereas the second list shows all of the cartoons unavailable on the service. For the numerous cartoons not on Disney+, most of them can be found on the Walt Disney Treasures DVDs unless I have indicated otherwise. This list will be updated as more cartoons are hopefully added to the service. There are some cartoons that will likely never be added to Disney+, due to either offensive cultural stereotypes or cartoons with themes that might be deemed too adult. Mickey’s Mellerdrammer and Der Fuehrer’s Face are two examples that come to mind, but there are many more. Despite this, they are included below.

Note: This only includes theatrical cartoon releases. Direct-to-video or television shorts will not be included. Also not included are the early Alice or Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons, as many of those remain lost and none of those are on the service at present. I have begun with the earliest cartoon on Disney+ (Steamboat Willie) and have moved forward chronologically.
