Hulu Orders New Musical Series, ‘Up Here’

Hulu is in development on a brand new musical romantic comedy and has been given an eight-episode series order, Deadline has learned. The series titled Up Here is from Tick, Tick… BOOM!‘s writer Steven Levenson, Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (The Carmichael Show, My Name Is Earl), Tony-winning Hamilton director Thomas Kail and Oscar, Emmy and Grammy-winning duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Frozen, WandaVision).

Kail, who directed the Disney+ Hamilton, will direct Up Here, which is written Levenson, Sanchez-Witzel, Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. The “Agatha All Along” and “Into The Unknown” duo will write original songs for the series.

Up Here will be set in New York City in the waning days of 1999, following the extraordinary story of one ordinary couple, as they fall in love – and discover that the single greatest obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves – and the treacherous world of memories, obsessions, fears, and fantasies that lives inside their heads.

The project is currently casting with 20th Television and Kail’s Old 320 Sycamore Productions co-producing. Production is schedule to begin this Summer in New York City. Jennifer Todd is also on board to executive produce.
