EXCLUSIVE: Martha Millan Discusses The Multi-Layered Representation In FOX’s ‘The Cleaning Lady’

FOX’s The Cleaning Lady was just renewed for a second season.

Shortly after the drama debuted on Fox, series star Martha Millan sat down in an exclusive interview with The DisInsider’s Editor-in-Chief Dempsey Pillot. Together, they discussed the importance of representing characters who are both Southeast Asian and who are immigrants.

“It’s quite historic,” Millan said, expressing her gratitude from the series’ creator Miranda Kwok for fighting for Southeast Asian characters to be front and center. She added that the insight into those cultures provided a proper understanding for why they make certain decisions over the course of the series.

“[The show] lends an understanding of other people, other cultures…especially with them being undocumented. I don’t think anybody wants to be undocumented in any way. But, you know, it also [demonstrates] our responsibility towards each other,” she said.
