‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Shatters Opening Night Expectations With $36 Million

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" boasts a terrific opening night box office result, giving hope for movie theatres.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is making lots of money, and its opening night results are excellent and higher than anticipated. According to Variety, the Sam Raimi-directed film earned over $36 million for Thursday previews, which started in the late afternoon. The film is currently looking to make at least $175 million this weekend, though the numbers could be higher depending on its performance on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Doctor Strange‘s box-office success marks the eighth largest opening night performance ever, behind Avengers: Infinity War, which raked $39 million at the domestic box office on opening night previews.

This boasts great news for movie theatres around the world, who are looking to restructure their losses after multiple hits of COVID variants and shutdowns, and proves how incredible of a beast Marvel Studios is at giving audiences a reason to go to the big screen and see Doctor Strange. The cross-media narrative, with WandaVision on Disney+ directly feeding into Multiverse of Madness, certainly helps and shows the amazing power Marvel has at selling its storylines and becoming a true box office juggernaut. I continue to believe that, without Marvel Studios and the MCU, our relationship with cinemas would be much different in a post-COVID world.
