You can officially add Big Thunder Mountain to Disney’s list of iconic attractions to get the big screen treatment.
According to Deadline, Hawkeye directing duo Bert and Bertie are set to direct a movie based on the Fantasyland attraction. LuckyChap Entertainment and Scott Free are producing with the Mulroney sisters writing the script.
Additional details on the project are being kept under wraps at this time but Disney has been trying to get a Big Thunder Mountain attraction off the ground for quite some time. A series was in the works as a drama at ABC from Ryan Reynolds but has since been canned. the film joins a list of growing Disney attraction-based projects which include the ongoing Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Jungle Cruise, which has a sequel in the works, the Haunted Mansion reboot set for next year, and a Space Mountain movie from Obi-Wan Kenobi writer Joby Harold.
The original theme park attraction opened in 1979 in Disneyland with another version opening soon after in Magic Kingdom and is an exhilarating mine cart ride set in a mining town where gold is discovered. The ride is one of the more recognizable coasters in all of Disney parks, also appearing in the Tokyo and Paris locations.
