‘Sky High’ Director is Ready For a Sequel

Before Disney was dominating the big screen and Disney+ with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they had their own superhero pic, which quickly became a cult classic, Sky High.

Fast forward 19 years to today, superhero movies are box office gold (well sometimes ala Madame Web or Aquaman 2) and fans want to see more from the world of Sky High and so does director Mike Mitchell.

While speaking with ComicBook.com, Mitchell revealed Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige is a big fan of Sky High and that if Disney was ready, he would be ready for a sequel.

“Here’s what it is. I know that Kevin Feig or Kevin Feige is a huge Sky High fan. Right when it came out, he met with me and we talked about it. His whole team loved it because it was the first superhero comedy that was having fun with the genre. But, at the same time honoring it. And so, the trick is this: That was not made under Marvel. That was before they [Disney] bought Marvel.”

“If we could pull Kevin into it. And, we could get Disney to…. Disney’s so scared of Marvel, Only Marvel can do superhero films. To which, I say, ‘Great!’ Let’s have Marvel do Sky High! That would be fun. So, I’m ready to go.”

The film 2005 stars Kelly Preston, Michael Angarano, Danielle Panabaker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Kurt Russell. It follows Will Stronghold (Angarano), the son of two superheroes who is enrolled in an airborne high school for teenage superheroes where his powers kick in; he must deal with a growing distance from his old friends, a threat from a mysterious supervillain and get the girl of his dreams.

On an estimated budget of US$35 million, the film grossed just under $64 million in the US, and another $22 million internationally, bringing the total to $86 million. While the reviews were not that strong in its initial release, it has become a cult classic amongst Disney fans, and thanks to Disney+ it has boosted that.
