The clock is ticking for Bob Iger. Although he’s slated to stay on as The Walt Disney Company’s CEO until 2026, the search for his successor has been underway for quite some time.
According to Bloomberg, the top search has recently intensified, and now there are four primary candidates to fill the role.
All four are internal divisional heads. They are Co-chairmen of Disney Entertainment Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro, and Chairperson of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Josh D’Amaro.
While no decision is expected this year, sources say that Disney is expected to appoint a No. 2 for Bob Iger to help him transition away from his role before the next CEO is named.
Bloomberg also reports that while the candidates are being reviewed by the company’s board, Iger is spending time with each of them to “help them understand how he approaches the job and give them exposure to business units they’re not familiar with.”
Now, while hiring someone from within would be ideal for the company, Outlying shareholders are keen on making sure the company considers some external candidates. Per Bloomberg, they are even attempting to secure board seats to “invigorate the search.”
Not since Michael Eisner’s appointment in 1984 has an “outsider” been bestowed the title of CEO. During the company’s next board meeting, this is sure to be discussed.
