Every couple of months we get some sort of Pirates of the Caribbean news, sometimes it’s is rumored, sometimes it’s from interviews. Well, today, we get more news regarding Disney’s biggest franchise.
While speaking with ComicBook.com, franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that the next movie in the Pirates franchise will be a complete reboot. He mentions the success of 2022s Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed over a billion dollars at the global box office.
“It’s hard to tell. You don’t know, you really don’t know. You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”

At this point, don’t count on Johnny Depp returning for this project as Captain Jack Sparrow. Now, that is not to say he won’t return in the future as the studio has been developing multiple projects in the franchise, including one with Barbie star Margot Robbie and one with The Last of Creator Craig Mazin, which is likely the one that Bruckheimer is referring to. It was previously rumored that The Bear star Ayo Edibiri was circling a role in the franchise, but that has yet to be confirmed at this time.
The franchise originated with the Pirates of the Caribbean theme ride attraction, which opened at Disneyland in 1967, the last Disney theme park attraction overseen by Walt Disney. The attraction can be found at four Disney theme parks. Since then, it has become a moneymaker, the five films have grossed over $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office. The franchise has also become a revenue booster in video games, merchandise, and more.
