You may have noticed (or not) that the Disney+ app’s logo suddenly started changing colors through all different devices a few days ago.

Gone is its singature dark blue background color and it’s now been replaced with a teal color.

Disney Plus' new logo

The change was met with mixed reactions from fans all over the world, but the main question remains unanswered: Why was this change necessary?

And while The Walt Disney Company has not yet made any comments on the subject, we have a few theories that could be behind this sudden change in branding.

Let’s explore them

Possible reason #1: The new logo reflects Disney+’s merger with Hulu

We’ve already reported that a Beta testing version of the Hulu on Disney+ app is already underway, with the official wide release date to come pretty much any day now.

So a popular theory is that the logo change comes as a result of this merger, so it can match the color scheme of both apps and be easily recognizable.

This is the most likely scenario. And it gets our hopes up that the wide release announcement is indeed coming really soon.

Possible reason #2: The new logo reflects a transitional time at Disney

According to TheDirect.com, another possible reason for the change it’s to commemorate the period of transition that the Disney+ platform itself is currently going through.

Meaning, the transition of removing its restrictive family-friendly image and evolving into a more mature and complete platform that will welcome all kinds of content.

While the original blue evoked the color scheme at Cinderella’s castle and a more fantastic and childish setting, this new teal color could signify the start of a more mature era coming for the brand as a whole.

Possible reason #3: They did not want consumers to be confuse Disney+ with other streaming apps

It’s no secret that blue is a popular color in the streaming world, as many streaming services, such as Prime Video and Paramount Plus, have blue in their logos.

However, we theorize that one particular app’s logo is the one that prompted Disney+ to change its logo so suddenly: The recently-launched HBO Max streaming platform.

As you probably know, the HBO Max platform recently got a branding makeover of their own by ditching their original white logo against a purple background and replaced it with a blue background after renaming the app to Max.

This blue background is rather similar to Disney+’s original blue background, so it stands to reason that Disney feared that consumers would find it confusing.

This is another plausible reason of the change, especially since it happened so soon after Max’s launch.
