FX/Hulu’s hit show Shogun has been renewed for not just one but two seasons, the network confirmed today.
Collaborating with the estate of renowned author James Clavell, plans are underway to expand Shogun with two more seasons. The production company emphasized that while both seasons are in the developmental phase, the decision for a two-season renewal hinges on the quality of the creative output.
A team of writers is being assembled to delve into the world of Shogun beyond the original novel penned by Clavell. Key figures from Shogun’s creative team, including co-creators and executive producers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, executive producer Michaela Clavell, and lead actor/producer Hiroyuki Sanada, are actively participating in the project’s development.
Shogun follows “the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.
Its ensemble cast includes Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow, and Fumi Nikaido.
The series debut collected nine million streaming views globally across Hulu, Disney+ and Star+. Disney said in March that those numbers were the best worldwide debut to date for a general entertainment scripted series (i.e., one that doesn’t fall under the Marvel, Star Wars, Disney Branded TV, Pixar or National Geographic banners).
