Filming wrapped on Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake back in March and while the film is post-production the question remains, when will the project debut?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is still on track to debut on Disney+ in 2024. When that will be remains to be seen. My best guess is we will get an announcement and possible first look during Disney’s D23 Ultimate Fan Event. Announcing anything sooner when the event is only two months away is silly at this point.
Just like the animated original, the remake tells the story of “the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction. Pursuing aliens, social workers, and the idea of the bond of family figure into the proceedings.”
Newcomer Maia Kealoha plays Lilo Pelekai, while Zach Galifianakis voices Dr. Jumba Jookiba, and Billy Magnussen voices Agent Pleakley. Sydney Agudong portrays Nani Pelekai, Kaipo Dudoit appears as David Kawena, Tia Carrere plays Mrs. Kekoa, Courtney B. Vance is Cobra Bubbles, Amy Hill is Tūtū, Jason Scott Lee plays a luau manager, and Chris Sanders returns as the voice of Stitch.
Additionally, we are hearing, which is kind of obvious, that the character Captain Gantu will appear in the remake. While not confirmed we did hear Kevin Michael Richardson would return to voice the character.
The film is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, with a script by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright. Producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, known for their work on the billion-dollar Aladdin remake in 2019, are also involved in this project.
