It’s been less than a month since Mufasa: The Lion King hit theaters. While it’s success is still being tabulated, one rumor suggests that Walt Disney Studios is already planning another entry in the franchise.
According to industry insider Daniel RPK, there is another live-action movie in active development at the House of Mouse. In a post published to his Patron Sunday evening, RPK also emphasized that the next film would not be a sequel to Mufasa.
Could this mean that we might see the actual direct-to-video sequel to original animated film adapted for the big screen? Only time will tell.
The sequel we’re referring to is The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride. It follows Simba and Nala’s daughter Kiara (substantiated and voiced by Blue Ivy Carter in Mufasa), who falls in love with Kovu, a lion from a banished pride once loyal to Scar. Against Simba’s wishes, Kiara and Kovu struggle to bring their estranged prides and be together.
Now, because this info has yet to be confirmed by Disney or any other major trade, as always we urge you to take it with a grain of salt. Consider RPK’s track record, however, we are inclined to believe it’s true.
