Disney+ has decided not to move forward with its pilot for Holes, a fresh take on Louis Sachar’s 1998 novel and the 2003 Disney film, featuring a female lead.
The pilot starred Shay Rudolph (from The Baby-Sitters Club), alongside Greg Kinnear and Aidy Bryant.
There was significant anticipation surrounding the project from Disney Branded Entertainment. A writers’ room had been established, and one of the tax credits awarded to Disney in August was designated for this potential series (though these credits are not tied to specific titles and can be reassigned). Despite the initial enthusiasm, the project ultimately did not meet the high standards set for the reboot, leading to the decision to halt its development.
Delis Alicea, Anire Kim Amoda, Noah Cottrell, Iesha Daniels, Sophie Dieterlen, Alexandra Doke, and Maeve Press also featured in the pilot, which was penned by Alina Mankin, with Liz Phang serving as the showrunner.
Phang and Mankin took on executive producer roles alongside Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg from Goddard Textiles, as well as the movie’s producer Mike Medavoy and Walden Media, the company behind the 2003 film, along with rights holder Shamrock. The project was produced by 20th Television.
