We’ve known for quite some time now that a third Maleficent film is in some form of development over at Disney. Despite star Angelina Jolie previously revealing that she’s signed on for at least one more film, the studio has yet to officially announce it.
Recently, we at The DisInsider have come across some information which may actually explain why the studio has yet to move forward with the film. If true, it may very well set the stage for one of the studio’s most exciting projects in years.
A person with knowledge of the situation tell us that the reason a third Maleficent film has yet to be announced is because the studio is planning a spin-off set against the backdrop of the character’s universe.

Titled “Fey Island,” the film expands the lore of the dark “Fey” introduced in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. The film is described as “a National Geographic-style exploration of the magical world.” The idea is for the audience to be introduced to several different environments, landscapes and cultures over the course of the film,. And the plan is for the project to offer an immersive visual experience with a heartfelt, emotionally raw story that draws audiences deep into the world of the “Fey.”
Both Roy Conli (known for his work on several DisneyNature documentaries) and Jolie are apparently involved in the project as producers. If the film does well, then it will pave the way for a third Maleficent feature.
Now, we couldn’t get all the info confirmed from multiple sources, which is why we’ve chosen to run it all as a rumor. Like all rumors, until confirmed by Disney or any of the major trades, all info should be taken with a grain of salt.
However, we are confident in our reporting – and not just because this source has given us good information in the past. Earlier today, The Wrap reported that Disney is going all in on Maleficent at its planned Villains Land, spending “hundreds of millions” on an attraction based on the character. We believe they wouldn’t bother investing so much on a character or franchise they did not see a viable future with.
So what do you think of this planned expansion of the Maleficent universe? Sound off below!
The Maleficent franchise takes inspiration from the 1959 animated classic, Sleeping Beauty, but from the perspective of the villainous Maleficent, where she’s adapted as protector and the most powerful fairy of the Moors, who, in revenge for betrayal, casts a curse on the daughter of her ex-lover King Stefan and Aurora. Over the course of the film, she goes from a hero to villain, following Stefan’s betrayal, and back to hero due to maternal feelings she develops towards Aurora.
The series stars Jolie and Elle Fanning. Released in 2014, Maleficent grossed over $758 million at the worldwide box office. In 2019, the sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil $490 million, while a step down from the first financially, it still managed to make a profit.
