Margaret Kerry, the Original Inspiration for Disney’s Tinker Bell, Dies at 97

The Disney community is mourning the loss of a true piece of animation history.

Margaret Kerry, the actress and dancer whose movements brought Disney’s iconic Tinker Bell to life in the 1953 animated classic Peter Pan, has passed away at the age of 97. Kerry died peacefully on June 11, 2026, in Wilmington, North Carolina, following a battle with lung cancer. She was surrounded by her family. (Hollywood Reporter)

While generations of Disney fans know Tinker Bell as the spirited fairy who sprinkles pixie dust over Disney productions and parks around the world, many may not realize that the beloved character’s personality and movement were inspired by Kerry’s performance. During the production of Peter Pan, Disney animators filmed Kerry acting out scenes on a soundstage, using her movements as live-action reference for the character’s animation.
