More than 25 years after Disney’s beloved The Parent Trap charmed audiences, a sequel may finally be on the horizon.
According to comments made by Lisa Ann Walter during an appearance on The Howard Stern Wrap Up Show, Disney is reportedly developing a sequel to the 1998 classic. Walter revealed she learned that Lindsay Lohan is expected to reprise her iconic dual role as Hallie Parker and Annie James and that she has also been approached about returning as the fan-favorite housekeeper, Chessy.
While the news has generated excitement across social media, it’s important to note that Disney has not officially announced the project, meaning the sequel remains in development rather than formally confirmed.
Released in 1998 and directed by Nancy Meyers, The Parent Trap launched Lindsay Lohan’s film career as she portrayed identical twins Annie James and Hallie Parker, who discover one another at summer camp before orchestrating an elaborate plan to reunite their divorced parents.
The film also starred Dennis Quaid, the late Natasha Richardson, Elaine Hendrix, Simon Kunz, and Lisa Ann Walter, becoming one of Disney’s most beloved live-action family films.
Rumors of a sequel have circulated for years, especially following Lohan’s Hollywood comeback and the cast’s reunions at recent Disney events. Walter has repeatedly expressed interest in returning, and last year even suggested Lohan may have already spoken with Disney about revisiting the franchise.
If the project moves forward, it would join Disney’s growing lineup of legacy sequels that reunite original casts decades later. With Freakier Friday helping reignite interest in Lindsay Lohan’s Disney career, many fans believe now is the perfect time to revisit one of the studio’s most cherished family films.
For now, Disney has yet to officially confirm The Parent Trap 2, but Walter’s latest comments suggest there may finally be real momentum behind a sequel fans have been hoping to see for decades.
