Disney’s live-action adaptation of Moana sailed to the top of the global box office this weekend, earning an estimated $95 million worldwide during its debut. While the film claimed the No. 1 spot both domestically and internationally, its opening came in below many industry expectations and ranks among the softer launches for Disney’s recent slate of live-action remakes.
Domestically, Moana brought in $43 million from 3,827 theaters, easily securing first place at the North American box office. Internationally, the film added another $52 million, bringing its worldwide opening total to $95 million.
The film stars Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana alongside Dwayne Johnson, who reprises his role as Maui after voicing the beloved demigod in the animated films. The live-action adaptation is directed by Thomas Kail and reimagines the story that became a global phenomenon following the release of the original animated film in 2016.
Although the opening weekend fell short of the impressive debuts enjoyed by remakes such as Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Aladdin, Disney will be looking to strong word-of-mouth and family audiences throughout the summer. The original Moana has remained one of the most-streamed animated films in recent years, giving the live-action version a strong foundation for continued box office performance.
Whether Moana can follow the long theatrical legs of previous Disney family releases remains to be seen, but opening at No. 1 worldwide is a solid start for the studio’s latest live-action adaptation. The coming weeks will determine whether the film can build momentum and capitalize on the enduring popularity of one of Disney Animation’s most beloved modern classics.
