The son of legendary Disney animator Ub Iwerks, Don carved out an extraordinary legacy of his own. Joining The Walt Disney Company in 1950, he dedicated more than 35 years to advancing the technology behind Disney’s films and theme parks. His work extended far beyond cameras and projectors—it transformed the way audiences experienced Disney storytelling.
Among his many accomplishments, Iwerks helped develop the revolutionary Circle-Vision 360 camera system, which debuted with Disneyland’s Circarama, U.S.A. on opening day in 1955. He also contributed to innovative filmmaking techniques used in classics such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and helped pioneer projection systems that would later become staples of Disney parks around the world. His passion for pushing technological boundaries eventually earned him both a Gordon E. Sawyer Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and induction as a Disney Legend in 2009.
