Tomorrowland is ready for its next chapter.
During the closing moments of the Horizons: A Carousel of Progress Disney Experiences showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney Experiences Chairman Thomas Mazloum dropped one of the weekend’s biggest pieces of Disneyland news: Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park is officially being reimagined.
And while Disney isn’t ready to pull back the curtain on everything just yet, the announcement could signal one of the most significant transformations to Disneyland’s original lands in years.
Honoring the Past While Building the Future
Disney says the goal is not simply to replace Tomorrowland, but to honor the legacy of Walt Disney’s original vision while creating something built for a new generation.
Walt Disney Imagineering is already developing ideas for the land’s next chapter, with Disney specifically confirming plans for new attractions, more open spaces and new places where guests can dream about the future.
That last part feels especially important.
Tomorrowland was never supposed to be a museum of what people once thought the future would look like. From the beginning, Walt envisioned the land as a place centered around optimism, innovation and the possibilities of what could come next.
Now, more than 70 years after Disneyland opened, Imagineering has the opportunity to make Tomorrowland feel like the future again.
New Attractions Are Coming
The biggest words in Disney’s announcement might be “new attractions.”
Disney stopped short of revealing exactly what those attractions will be, meaning we don’t have names, concepts, opening dates or construction timelines yet.
But confirmation that new attractions are part of the plan immediately makes this much bigger than a cosmetic refresh.
Disney also says the project will introduce more open spaces throughout Tomorrowland, potentially giving Imagineers the opportunity to rethink how guests move through one of Disneyland’s busiest and most recognizable areas.
Exactly what stays, what changes and what eventually disappears remains one gigantic question mark.
And you can bet Disney fans are going to have plenty of opinions about all three.
Bringing Walt’s Optimism Back to Tomorrowland
Perhaps the most encouraging part of the announcement is Disney’s repeated emphasis on Walt Disney’s original philosophy for Tomorrowland.
When Disneyland opened in 1955, Walt described Tomorrowland as a place representing humanity’s achievements and offering guests a glimpse toward a promising future.
That sense of optimism has always been buried somewhere inside Tomorrowland. Now Disney appears ready to put it front and center again.
Rather than chasing one specific version of “the future,” Imagineering has a chance to create a land built around something much more timeless: the idea that tomorrow can always be better than today.
That feels pretty damn appropriate for Disneyland.
Tomorrowland’s Future Is Finally Coming Into Focus
There are still far more questions than answers.
What happens to Star Tours? What does the future hold for the former Innoventions building? How dramatically will the land’s architecture change? And, of course, what are those new attractions?
For now, Disney isn’t saying.
What we do know is that Tomorrowland’s transformation is officially in development, Imagineers are already working on the concepts, and Disney says additional details will be revealed in the years ahead.
After decades of fans wondering when Disneyland would finally turn its attention toward Tomorrowland, we finally have an answer.
Tomorrow starts now.
