20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment have released the first trailer and poster for Whalefall, an intense new survival thriller that takes the phrase “trapped with your thoughts” to an entirely different level.
Based on Daniel Kraus’ acclaimed novel of the same name, the film follows Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams, as he dives off California’s Central Coast in search of his late father’s remains. What begins as a deeply personal mission quickly becomes a fight for survival when Jay is swallowed by a massive sperm whale.
Yes, you read that correctly.
One Hour of Oxygen. One Impossible Escape.
Trapped inside the whale with only one hour of oxygen remaining, Jay must find a way out before time runs out. His best chance of survival may come from the hard-earned lessons passed down by his father, played by Josh Brolin.
The first trailer teases a claustrophobic and emotional thriller built around grief, survival, and one of the most terrifying situations imaginable. Abrams appears to carry much of the story from inside the whale, where every breath counts and escape seems nearly impossible.
Director, co-writer, and producer Brian Duffield revealed that the cast and crew spent an entire summer filming inside a whale set built on a soundstage in Studio City, California. He described the film as both thrilling and emotional while praising the work of everyone involved in bringing Kraus’ story to the screen.
A Stacked Cast Takes the Plunge
Alongside Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin, Whalefall stars Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd.
Duffield directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Daniel Kraus. The film is produced by Brian Grazer, Brian Duffield, Jeb Brody, and Allan Mandelbaum.
With its wild premise, ticking clock, and deeply emotional father-son story, Whalefall looks ready to deliver a survival thriller unlike anything audiences have seen before.
Whalefall opens exclusively in theaters on October 16.
