A Disney Legend Finally Gets Her Star: Lea Salonga Makes Hollywood History

Some voices become part of a movie. Others become part of your childhood.

Lea Salonga’s voice belongs in that second category.

The Disney Legend and Broadway powerhouse was honored Friday with the 2,855th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the first Filipina ever to receive the prestigious recognition.

Salonga received her star in the Live Performance category during a ceremony held in front of the historic Pantages Theatre. She was joined by an impressive group of friends and fellow performers, including Brandy, Ming-Na Wen, Darren Criss, and H.E.R.

For Disney fans, Salonga will forever be remembered as the unforgettable singing voice behind two of the company’s most beloved heroines. She performed as Princess Jasmine in 1992’s Aladdin and brought Mulan’s songs to life in Disney’s 1998 animated classic.

That means when Jasmine took audiences on a magic carpet ride during “A Whole New World,” that was Salonga. When Mulan wondered when her reflection would show who she was inside, that was Salonga too.

Those weren’t just great Disney songs. They became generational anthems—and Salonga’s voice helped make them timeless.

During the ceremony, Brandy celebrated Salonga not simply for her extraordinary voice but for the doors she opened for performers and audiences who rarely saw themselves represented in Hollywood. Ming-Na Wen, who provided Mulan’s speaking voice, also helped honor the woman who gave the character her incredible singing voice.

Honestly, seeing the two halves of Mulan standing together to celebrate this moment is enough to hit any Disney fan directly in the feelings.

Long before her Disney career, Salonga had already established herself as an undeniable force on the stage. Her performance in Miss Saigon made her the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award, and her remarkable career has continued across Broadway, film, television, and concert stages around the world.

But this particular honor feels bigger than another trophy or name on a sidewalk.

Salonga’s star represents every young Filipino performer who grew up hearing her voice and realizing someone who looked like them could command a Broadway stage, become a Disney Princess, and earn a permanent place in Hollywood history.

She didn’t simply walk through a door. She kicked it open and made damn sure others could follow her.

After receiving the honor, Salonga reflected on a career that has taken her further than she ever imagined. She also expressed hope that her star would inspire future generations of Filipino artists to keep dreaming.

That feels perfectly fitting for someone whose voice has encouraged generations of Disney fans to discover a whole new world and finally recognize the person staring back at them in the mirror.

This star may have been a long time coming, but there is no question that Lea Salonga earned every bit of it.

Congratulations to a true Disney icon—and now, officially, a Hollywood legend.
