Royce Williams has a life story that deserves the big screen. Disneyland recently gave the 101-year-old retired Navy captain a tribute worthy of it.
In a story shared on October 8, Disney revealed that Williams was named an Honorary Citizen of Disneyland in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle. For the decorated aviator, the connection was personal: he considered Walt Disney a hero during World War II because of his work supporting American troops.
A Hero With an Extraordinary History
Williams served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. In November 1952, he faced seven Soviet MiG fighters while flying from the USS Oriskany. The mission remained classified for more than five decades.
His career included over 220 combat missions and honors including the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross and Silver Star.

Main Street Pays Its Respects
Disneyland celebrated Williams with a special Flag Retreat, joined by cast members, the Disneyland Band and Dapper Dans. Friends and fellow retired aviators accompanied him.
He later visited Disney California Adventure for a ride on Soarin’ Across America.
There is something powerful about seeing Main Street pause to honor someone like Williams. At 101, this aviator deserves every salute coming his way.
