Disney Acquires SADE A Live-Action Film Centered Around An African Princess

Disney just acquired the rights to Sade, a live-action fairy-tale about an African princess. Dope director Rick Famuyiwa attached to produce.

According to Deadline, The studio bought a pitch from Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer, who will co-write the screenplay. Below is a quick synopsis on the film.

Young African girl named Sadé whose kingdom is threatened by a mysterious evil force and accepts her newly discovered magical powers to protect her people, with the help of the kingdom’s prince.

Famuwiya will produce and Scott Falconer will executive produce through their Verse production banner. Tendo Nagenda and Zoe Kent are overseeing the project for the studio. A director has yet to be named.

Disney saw massive success this year with its Marvel tentpole Black Panther, set in the fictional African nation of Wakanda with worldwide box office grosses hitting $1.35 billion. It’s the third-highest domestic performer of all time at $700 million.

This will be Disney’s second african princess and first in a live-action form. In 2009, Disney broke new ground with their first Black princess, Tiana, in The Princess and the Frog. There was some backlash to the film, as Tiana spent a majority of the film as a frog, which some felt took away from the importance of having a Black princess. This film will hopefully learn from that mistake and keep Sadé human for a majority of the film.

I feel they will have to work hard to prevent people from comparing it to Black Panther.

I think North West should play her as a little girl & Zoe Kravitz should play her as a young woman
