Marvel Studios has decided to put Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on hold for the foreseeable future

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel had been preparing for pre-production on the project, however, employees are being relieved of their duties and free to look for new work.

In July, director James Gunn was let go by Disney following the unearthing of inappropriate tweets Gunn made years ago. Gunn previously wrote and directed both Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He had written the script for the third installment of the film series and was set to direct the project which was expected to kick off production early next year for a 2020 release.

Since his firing, the cast penned an open letter to Disney have Gunn reinstated. In addition, countless celebrities have shown their support for Gunn while fans have launched petitions in an effort for Gunn to be brought back. But Disney is sticking firmly to their decision to remove Gunn from his position as the controversial nature of his tweets do not fit with the company’s image.

Marvel Studios will reportedly still use Gunn’s script for the film, however, it’s likely that the replacement director will put their polish on it before stepping behind the camera. THR has also reported that Marvel Studios recently had a meeting with Taika Waititi to discuss another collaboration. The exact project that could bring them back together isn’t currently known. However Guardians could be an option.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, and Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha.
