Disney broke the internet this week by posting their theatrical release plans that included films slated all the way up to the year 2027.
The list included release dates from popular franchises like Avatar and Marvel, but the most exciting news was the mention of the upcoming, new Untitled Star Wars trilogy that we’ve all been waiting to hear about. While they haven’t released much information yet, here’s everything that we currently know about it.

We’ll have to wait three years before seeing another Star Wars film.
The Untitled Star Wars trilogy will premiere its first film in December 2022! Yes, you heard it right, that’s three long years after Episode IX drops; Lucasfilm is finally taking a break from making films after their five-year streak of releases. They were in previous talks to produce films centered on fan-favorite characters, Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi but scrapped the ideas after the underperformance of Solo. Instead, they’re taking a step back, which comes as a relief to fans who were starting to question the trajectory of the films. Anyways, we’ll have the Disney+ Mandalorian series to keep ourselves occupied.
The rest of the trilogy is set to release in 2024 and 2026.

The trilogy will be directed by Rian Johnson (most likely) or David Benioff & Dan Weiss.
Back in 2017, Lucasfilm announced that Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi) will be helming his own Star Wars series. Not long after, they released that David Benioff and Dan Weiss (Game of Thrones) would have their own trilogy set in the Old Republic era. Since Johnson’s trilogy was announced first, it would only make sense that these upcoming Untitled Star Wars films would be directed by him. Not to mention, David & Dan have been busy wrapping up their last season of Game of Thrones and probably haven’t had as much time to work on a huge Star Wars trilogy. Although, the studio hasn’t released any statements on the topic so far.

The films will separate from the Skywalker Saga.
Lucasfilm has made it very clear that Episode IX will be the last film in the Skywalker Saga and with that being said, this new trilogy will be separate from it and feature all new characters and stories. We don’t know much else about the premise of the films, although the official Star Wars website teased that Johnson’s trilogy would be about “a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored”. Despite The Last Jedi controversy, it’s clear that Johnson isn’t afraid to push boundaries and I’m excited to see the characters he brings to life in his own trilogy. Maybe with the separation from the Original Trilogy characters, lifelong fans will be more accepting of the stories he has to tell.
As the Skywalker Saga wraps up this December, we’ll be anxiously awaiting our next Star Wars fix. More information about the new trilogy will, hopefully, start to release as soon as April next year during Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim.
