Jon Watts has already taken Spider-Man across the multiverse. Now he may be headed for a galaxy far, far away.
According to Deadline, the director behind Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy is attached to direct the first film in a new Star Wars trilogy being written by Simon Kinberg. Knight Edge Media first reported that Lucasfilm was circling Watts for the job.
That’s a pairing worth getting excited about. Watts knows how to handle a massive franchise without losing sight of the people at the center of it. He also knows his way around Star Wars: he co-created the Disney+ series Skeleton Crew.
The bigger question is what story this trilogy would tell. Deadline describes the project as a continuation of the Skywalker Saga and reports that Daisy Ridley is being eyed for a return as Rey. For fans who have wondered where Rey’s journey goes after The Rise of Skywalker, that possibility alone is enough to start a conversation.
But keep the lightsabers holstered for a moment. Lucasfilm has not officially announced Watts as director, Ridley’s return has not been confirmed, and Disney has not greenlit the film. There’s no release date, either. Calling it Episode X at this stage would get ahead of what the studio has actually confirmed.
Still, Watts and Star Wars make for one hell of a headline. If this comes together, he’ll have a chance to help shape the franchise’s next big-screen chapter. And if Rey is part of it, the galaxy could be about to revisit one of its biggest unfinished questions: what comes after the Skywalker Saga’s ending?
