Deadline is reporting that Game of Thrones writing/directing duo David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have walked away from their deal with Lucasfilm to develop a Star Wars trilogy starting in 2022.
Sadly, the duo who just signed a multi-million dollar Netflix deal schedules were full but their enthusiasm for Star Wars remains boundless.
“We love Star Wars, when George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.“
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy also issued a statement:
“David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

As disappointing as this new may be to some, Lucasfilm still has The Rise of Skywalker that hits this December, and Lucasfilm also has multiple projects in the works including, the Rian Johnson trilogy, Kevin Feige’s unknown project, not to mention the Disney+ projects including the aforementioned The Mandalorian, the untitled Cassian Andor series and the Obi-Wan series. So we have tons of Star Wars goodness for years to come.
