When we last saw him in Avengers: Endgame, it seemed like Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner had reached the completion of his arc. He’d merged Banner with the Hulk to create the “best of both worlds,” but it seems that Ruffalo’s time as the green hero may not be over.
In a recent interview with Variety, Ruffalo left the door open to a solo film that’s been long-speculated. Technically, this character has had a solo film in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, starring Edward Norton, but fans have been clamoring for another since Mark Ruffalo took over the role in 2012’s The Avengers.
There’s an idea that I think could be really interesting. We’ve never really followed him into his life. He’s always kind of off on the side. He’s like the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the Avengers. It’d be interesting to fill in all the blanks about what happened to him between all these movies.
Fans would be happy to see Ruffalo’s Hulk feature in his own solo movie, especially since there hasn’t been a solo Hulk film that was widely received well. That said, Marvel’s current Phase 4 lineup does not currently include any such film. Feige even listed plans they have for a potential Phase 5 at San Diego Comic-Con, including Black Panther 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Blade, but no word on Hulk.
Marvel is currently in pre-production on the Disney+ series She-Hulk, and Ruffalo hinted that Banner may make an appearance.
There’s some talk of having Banner/Hulk show up in She-Hulk. If we come up with something good, that would be really interesting. Right now that’s about it. That’s all there is on the table.

While the future for a solo Hulk film isn’t necessarily bright, Ruffalo’s interest is an indication that it is certainly still possible. It wouldn’t be the first time Marvel retroactively made a film set in a time that had already passed in the MCU. 2019’s Captain Marvel was set in the 1990’s, and the upcoming Black Widow is set after the events of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.
