After two years, Disney+ is finally expanding its content library to include more movies and shows set and centered around the Asian-Pacific community.
Altogether there will be more than 20 new local, regional, and global projects added to the streamer. The timing of this move is interesting considering that the hit South Korean series Squid Game has set the world ablaze, leaving many viewers craving more content from the community to fill the void.
In a statement made today by the President of Disney Asia Pacific, Luke Kang, it was confirmed that all of the productions will arrive over the next year rather than all at once. They will, however, consist of a variety of scripted and unscripted projects across all genres including comedy, sci-fi, documentary, and anime.
“With over-the-top services going mainstream, emergence of world-class content from Asia Pacific and rising consumer sophistication, we believe that this is the right time for us to deepen our collaboration with the region’s best content creators to deliver unparalleled storytelling to global audiences,” Kang said.
There are plans to deliver an estimated 50 new APAC projects to Disney+ by 2023.
One of the first projects to hit the platform will be an exclusive documentary about the female K-Pop group Blackpink. You can view overviews for the film and the rest of the projects expected to premiere down below.
