New In the Round Version of ‘Newsies the Musical’ Sets London Opening Date!
As recently announced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Newsies the Musical will be making the long-awaited leap across the pond with its first professional production in Britain. And now we have an opening date!
The musical is based upon the 1992 film, which follows the true story of the Newsboys’ strike of 1899. The musical features songs by Tony Award-winners Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein. The show premiered on September 25th 2011, at the Paper Mill Playhouse before transferring to Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre.
The show was scheduled to play for a limited time but became such a smash hit, with eight Tony Awards nominations and two wins, that its stay lasted until August 24th, 2014.
The British production will play at London’s Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre in North London for a strictly limited season from November 28th 2022. It will be a brand new non-replica version of the show with new choreography from Matt Cole, who stated:
“As a huge fan of the original Disney film and the Broadway production, I am extremely honoured and thrilled to be reimagining this brand new version for London and the UK. With an incredible score by the legendary Alan Menken and book by Harvey Fierstein we will bring this all-singing, all-dancing show to Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre. This site-specific version of the show provides an exciting opportunity to present the piece in a non-traditional format. Set in the round, the audience will be thrust into turn-of-the-century New York, where the action and choreography will weave its way in and out of the audience. I cannot wait to work with this talented creative team on delivering this wonderful and exciting show to the UK.”
At the time of writing, no date has been announced for the final performance or whether the show will eventually transfer to the West End, but we’ll keep you updated!
You can watch the original film (under the UK title “THE NEWS BOYS”) and the filmed stage production of the musical on Disney+!
