James Gunn Teases A ‘Ridiculous’ Holiday ‘Guardians’ Special, Calls It ‘The Greatest Thing’ He’s Done

It’s no secret that James Gunn is one of Hollywood’s busiest writers, directors, and producers. It’s been a little over a month since James Gunn’s critically acclaimed Peacemaker spin-off at HBO Max aired its (season) finale, and he’s already working hard on not just his next project but his next two: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Even though Volume 3 won’t come out until next year, the Holiday Special will hit Disney+ just in time for Christmas this year. Nevertheless, it’s shrouded in just as much secrecy as everything else in the Marvel Cinematic Universe these days…or at least it was.

In a recent interview with RadioTimes.com, Gunn hyped the Holiday Special as “the greatest thing [he’s ever done.”

While he did not provide any more context or information, he wasted no time reassuring fans how “ridiculous” it would be.

“Every day we can’t believe that we’re making it,” he added. “We all completely love it. It is unlike anything that anyone’s ever seen before. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Fortunately, fans will also get to see the Guardians of the Galaxy cameo in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder.

The last we saw the Guardians, at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Rocket (Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel) were joined by Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to search for Gamora (Zoe Saldana). She disappeared following the climactic battle with Thanos and his army.

Will Poulter (The Revenant) also joins the cast as Adam Warlock, with Peacemaker star Chukwudi Iwuji in an unknown role, rumored to be the High Evolutionary.

Announced by Kevin Feige, president, Marvel Studios, and chief creative officer, Marvel, at The Walt Disney Company’s Investor Day in December 2020, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to write and direct the special, which will be a Disney+ exclusive.

Just after the announcement, Gunn revealed that he had been discussing the special with Kevin Feige over the years and that he was inspired by The Star Wars Holiday Special.

The holiday special will take place before the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and because of that, it is unknown if Zoe Saldana’s Gamora will make an appearance.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
