SEE IT: The Wakandan Upgrades Anthony Mackie’s Captain America Suit Almost Had In ‘The Falcon And The Winter Soldier’

Last week, Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Art of the Series was released. A compilation of behind-the-scenes artwork from the Marvel/Disney+ series, it showcases some cool things that both did and did not make it into the final product.

As we now know, his wings are made of Vibranium – and just as strong as the shield he wields – but according to development concept illustrator Wesley Burt, the original plan was to have Anthony Mackie’s Captain America suit utilize even more Wakandan technology.

For one, the shield was originally supposed to have a much larger radius, creating this large protective dome whenever it came under attack.

Per The Direct, in the book Burt says the idea was inspired by the wall that cloaks Wakanda, as well as the shields used by Wakanda warriors in Avengers: Infinity War. “[We wanted to] emphasize the defensive nature of the shield itself,” he said.

Additionally, there was an idea to have Sam’s wings be able to house the shield. Of all the conceptualized upgrades, this one would have made the most sense so its surprising that it didn’t happen.

While so many of these concepts winded up on the cutting room floor, there is absolutely a chance they could still be added or revisited when we next see Mackie pick up the shield.

Following the announcement that Anthony Mackie has officially closed a deal to return and star in the next installment of Captain America for Marvel Studios, it’s believed that filming will take place relatively soon.

Sources close to The Cosmic Circus originally believed that the project would begin principal photography this Summer; however, with so many other projects announced in the last few months it may no longer be a priority. In any case, we could hear an official update from Marvel Studios in the comings weeks at San Diego Comic-Con or D23.

The Falcon and the Winter Solider is available to stream in its entirety on Disney+. A hardcover version of Marvel Studios’ The Falcon & The Winter Soldier: The Art Of The Series can be purchased here.
