Composer Nathan Matthew David to Score Disney+’s ‘Chang Can Dunk’

Composer Nathan Matthew Davis (Young Rock) has composed the score for Disney+’s basketball movie Chang Can Dunk, Film Music Reporter has learned.

Chang Can Dunk follows Chang, a 16-year-old, Asian American high school student in the marching band, who bets the school basketball star that he can dunk by Homecoming. The bet leads the 5’ 8″ Chang on a quest to find the hops he needs to dunk in order to impress his crush, Kristy, and finally gain the attention and respect of his high school peers. But before he can rise up and truly throw one down, he’ll have to reexamine everything he knows about himself, his friendships and his family.

The film stars Bloom Li, Ben Wang, Dexter Darden, Chase Liefeld, Eric Anthony Lopez, Nile Bullock, Zoe Renee, and Mardy Ma.

In his feature-film debut, Jingyi Shao is writing and directing from a script he wrote that placed second on last year’s Blacklist. Brad Weston is producing along with Emmy award-winning Lena Waithe and Rishi Rajani of Hillman Grad productions. Pamela Thur serves as executive producer. The film hits Disney+ in 2023.

As for Nathan Matthew David, some of his recent accolades include a 2020 Peabody Award and an ASCAP award for his work on Surviving R, Kelly, as well as the 2020 Dean and Mary Kay ASCAP Foundation award. In 2021, he was nominated for a Sports Emmy for his work on the HBO documentary Under The Grapefruit Tree.
