Androids. Aliens. Witches. Those are just some of the kinds of characters the superheroes within Marvel’s Cinematic Universe have befriended and fought over the last fourteen years. Next week, that list will grow ever longer when monsters officially make their MCU debut in Marvel Studios’ inaugural TV Special Werewolf By Night.

As the name implies, the special will introduce a character by the name of Jack Russell who will possess the ability to transform into a werewolf. In the series, Russell will also be joined by a mysterious creature named Man-Thing. Although the special has yet to hit Disney+, and fans have yet to meet these new monsters, it appears that there are already plans for more to arrive in the near future.

According to a recent interview with one of the special’s producers, Brian Gay, it was revealed that Werewolf by Night is essentially just the beginning. Speaking to The Direct Gay said, “it’s just peeling back the corner of monsters in the MCU.”

Acknowledging the fact that the special will only feature a handful of creatures, Gay also said that it’s implied that there are so many more who have been around “for centuries.” He said, “So there’s not just the monsters that are part of Werewolf by Night, but the ones that were up on the wall, there’s some of that artwork as well. What all this lends to is the idea that there have been monsters within the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they’ve been being tracked or hunted or kept at bay by these hunters.”

As for when fans can expect to see those monsters again, Gay couldn’t say anything too specific, but he did confirm that, “This wide swath of different species and types, they’re going to pop up again. You’re going to see these guys in different ways, of course.”

Does that mean we eventually get that previously rumored Moon Knight/Werewolf by Night crossover? Could Man-Thing meet Thor, like Ragnarok teased?

While it sounds like anything is possible, we’re just excited to see how these character play out in their first appearances.

The upcoming special will star Gael Garcia Bernal (Coco) will star as the titular Werewolf, who goes by Jack Russell by day. Laura Donnelly (The Nevers) will co-star. For those unfamiliar with the character, originally known as Jack Russell, he inherited the ability to transform into a werewolf from his father who was also a warlock. When he moonlights as the creature, as expected, he’s granted superhuman strength and stamina.

Marvel recently revived the character in April 2020 with Werewolf by Night #1, a miniseries starring Jake Gomez, created by the writing team consisting of Black Eyed Peas‘ Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff and Scot Eaton. In this version, Jake, aka. Red Wolf, is a member of the Hopi Native American tribe whose family has been cursed with lycanthropy. Jake Gomez has the same transformation abilities like Jack Russell. Werewolf By Night is probably most known for his frequent association with Moon Knight, who is set to have his own Disney+ series starring Oscar Isaac as the titular character.

Werewolf By Night debuts on Disney+ October 7th!.
