‘Hocus Pocus 2’ Breaks Nielsen Streaming Record
Hocus Pocus 2 is here and is proving to be a massive hit for Disney+. The sequel drew more than 2.7 billion minutes of viewing from September 26 to October 2.
The sequel, which stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimi, quite easily beat the previous leader, Disney’s animated smash hit Encanto. It had 2.2 billion minutes of viewing from December 27, 2021, through January 2, 2022.
What makes this more remarkable is that Nielsen, who conducted the analytics only measure TV. Mobile devices are not counted as part of their analytics. Nielsen also calculated that demographics were 2-to-11-year-old, 18-to-34, and 35-to-49 age groups each accounting for one-quarter of viewing. About 21% of viewing came in Hispanic homes.
The original Hocus Pocus also had a surge in minutes of viewing with 774 million.
The sequel follows three young women who accidentally bring back the Sanderson Sisters to modern-day Salem and must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking havoc on the world.
Directed by Anne Fletcher, Hocus Pocus 2 also stars Sam Richardson, Whitney Peak, Belissa Escobedo, Lilia Buckingham, Tony Hale, Hannah Waddingham, and Doug Jones, who also reprises his role as Billy Butcherson. Check out our interview with film’s costume designer Salvador Perez Jr.
