Just announced during Disney’s second quarter fiscal earning call: Disney intends on buying Hulu and combining it with Disney+ by the end of the year.
Just two months ago, Iger was still weighing his options in regards to the company, which Disney currently still shares ownership with alongside Comcast.
Iger previously noted how the platform consisted of content “undifferentiated” from its primary platform Disney+, and said that could impact the ultimate decision as to whether the streamer is sold off. The company still has until early 2024 to make a decision about a possible sale.
If the platform is sold, it’s not entirely clear how that might impact the creation of a combined application.
Disney merging the two platforms will result in a similar all-encompassing service similar to how Disney+ already is overseas.
UPDATE: An earlier version of this article stated that Disney was indeed planning on buying Hulu in order to combine it with Disney+. That is not the case. As mentioned above, The Walt Disney Company has until 2024 to make a definitive decision about a potential Hulu sale.
