It’s been nearly 20 years since a little Disney film named Sky High hit theaters. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics and audiences, the film was not the hit the studio hoped for. Turns out it was released too early for the superhero renaissance ushered in by Marvel.
Over the years not only has it gained quite the cult following. Many fans have been quite vocal about seeing a sequel come to fruition. While there aren’t any plans for a follow-up at Walt Disney Studios, that hasn’t stopped the original director from coming forward with his own.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, while promoting Kung-Fu Panda 4, director Mike Mitchell shared where he hoped the franchise would go in a potential sequel.
“All the original kids would be back again, including Cousin Greg. That was one of his first films.” By that, he means Nicholas Braun, who – in case anyone did not know – starred in the film long before his Succession days.
“Mary Elizabeth Winsted as Royal Pain, Kurt Russell would have to be back as well,” he added.
He further explained that the plot of the film would focus on the students from the first film being teachers at a new superhero school, which would also be a collegiate campus.
“We figured all the kids are now grown up and they’re all university teachers at a place called Save U,” Mitchell said. “You just take all that fun and we bring it from the high school into the college years. It would be such a blast.”
Mitchell added that he, “never had so much fun working on something,” so it only makes sense he’d be down to return to the world again. Whether that day ever it comes just depends on the superpowers at Disney.

Now, this isn’t the first time Mitchell expressed his enthusiasm for the film either. Early this year, he talked about his admiration for Kevin Feige and how much it would be an honor to return to the genre.
The 2005 film starred Michael Angarano, Danielle Panabaker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kurt Russell, and the late Kelly Preston. It follows Will Stronghold (Angarano), the son of two superheroes who is enrolled in an airborne high school for teenage superheroes where his powers kick in; he must deal with a growing distance from his old friends, a threat from a mysterious supervillain and get the girl of his dreams.
On an estimated budget of US$35 million, the film grossed just under $64 million in the US, and another $22 million internationally, bringing the total to $86 million. While the reviews were not that strong in its initial release, it has become a cult classic amongst Disney fans, and thanks to Disney+ it has boosted that.
