Dick Van Dyke, the renowned actor, comedian, and Disney Legend, achieved a remarkable feat by securing the 2024 Daytime Emmy award for his outstanding guest performance in the daytime drama series Days of Our Lives on Peacock. At the age of 98, Van Dyke has become the oldest actor to ever receive a Daytime Emmy victory.
For Disney, he portrayed Bert and Mr. Dawes Sr. (in which he was briefly credited as “Navckid Keyd” as an anagram of his name, before the mixed letters arranged themselves into the proper name) in the 1964 musical film Mary Poppins. He also starred as Robinson Crusoe in Lt. Robin Crusoe USN, Jack Albany in Never a Dull Moment, and D.A. Fletcher in Dick Tracy. Additionally, he was the host of Donald Duck’s 50th Birthday and Golden Anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
His role as Robinson Crusoe was later spoofed by Genie in the Aladdin TV series. He also appeared in Mickey’s Pirate Adventure as the voice of Captain Goof-Beard (Goofy’s grandfather). Additionally, he made an appearance as himself in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, albeit uncredited. He also played Mr. Dawes Jr. in Mary Poppins Returns (which echoes the “Navckid Keyd” anagram from the original film).
In 1986, Van Dyke inducted Walt Disney into the American Television Hall of Fame. In 1998, he was inducted as a Disney Legend. Van Dyke celebrated his 90th birthday at Disneyland, where he was presented with a silhouette of Bert dancing.
