It’s the end of an era for the Jim Henson Company, as they are currently in the process of selling their iconic Jim Henson Company Lot.
Per Drew Taylor’s story over on TheWrap, “The sale is “part of a much longer-term strategy to have The Jim Henson Company and our renowned Burbank-based Jim Henson’s Creature Shop under one roof, which is not feasible in Hollywood due to the space the Shop requires.”
The property was originally established by film star Charlie Chaplin and functioned as Charlie Chaplin Studios from 1917 until 1953. During this time, it was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. After Chaplin sold the property in 1953, it underwent numerous ownership changes and was known as Kling Studios, the Red Skelton Studios, and served as a filming location for the television series Adventures of Superman and Perry Mason. From 1966 to 1999, it housed the headquarters of A&M Records and the A&M Recording Studios.
Since 2000, it has been the headquarters of The Jim Henson Company, including the Henson Soundstage and Henson Recording Studios. The studio has developed multiple iconic projects, most recently being Disney+’s Earth to Ned.
According to the trade, it is unknown at this time where the Jim Henson Company is relocating to. It is also unknown if they will offer tours at their new facility or continue Puppet Up!, a live show that is held at the studio and seasonally at Knott’s Berry Farm during their Knott’s Scary Farm event.
