‘Buffy’ Reboot at Hulu Not Moving Forward

Fans of Buffy The Vampire Slayer are in for some disappointing news.

Hulu has made the decision to cancel their plans for a Buffy reboot, which would’ve brought back star Sarah, Michelle Geller. The actress informed her fans on Instagram.

Rumors have circulated that the pilot episode directed by Chloe Zhao was not received well. As of now, it is unknown if this is the reason, the streamer might’ve pushed the pause button. Zhao a lifelong Buffy fan may have been the wrong choice to direct insiders say.

According to sources, Hulu does remain committed to getting this IP off the ground in one form or another, whether it’s re-trying the reboot with Geller or a complete new iteration altogether.

The new series was to feature a new Slayer as the primary protagonist, while Buffy Summers would appear in a recurring role.

Ryan Kiera Armstrong was cast in the lead role.In July 2025, Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel Di Tomasso and Jack Cutmore-Scott were announced as series regulars in the pilot. Filming for the pilot began in Los Angeles in August 2025 and additional cast members were announced, including Merrin Dungey, Audrey Hsieh, Audrey Grace Marshall and Chase Sui Wonders.
